Truffles for Stuffled Bellies (ie; more balled food, oops haha)

there's good news and bad news.

the bad news is, I am hungover and drinking black-as-night-coffee with sweetener in it because that's my remedy for feeling like my organs have turned to metal. but the good news is that I had the BEST DINNER ever last night. EVER.


See, my sister works at the neat-o Wheat Berry (where I used to work, actually), and they had their christmas party yesterday at the also neat-o Green Door restaurant - complete with free food! No more paying by weight for some seriously delectable foodstuffs. I had a plate full of sesame-oiled-kale-squash, and greek rice cabbage rolls, vegan fig bars, all sorts of beans, peanut satay whatnot, crispy-tender sourdough with little seeds in it, these awesome chewy noodle thingers with seaweed in them, more fig bars. Tapenade. Salsa. Punch with organic berries in it (and alcohol besides)! I missed the apple pie, but there was apple pie there, too. Lordy, it was fabulous.


I made some truffles. They're on the ooey-gooey side, but they taste really good. And not bad for about 10 minutes of work. There's kind of a recipe? But also kind of not, so here's a list of ingredients I was throwing around ---

150 grams of dark chocolate (chopped really finely)
2/3 cup almond milk (or less)
2 tbsp soy milk powder
2 tbsp margarine
3 tbsp canadian whiskey
1/2 tsp vanilla
2 tbsp icing sugar (maybe)
1 tbsp cocoa powder (sort of)
pinch of salt

* heat the milk, milk powder and margarine almost to boiling, then add the chocolate, remove from heat and let it sit for a minute.
* stir to melt the chocolate, add the rest of the ingredients (probably add more icing sugar or cocoa powder than I did at this point, to make the truffles firmer.)
* move to a container, let it cool to room temp, cover with plastic and chill overnight
* when it's cold, dish out little truffle-balls and roll them in............

cocoa powder, roasted chopped nuts, icing sugar, more melted chocolate, cocoa nibs, cinnamon, matcha powder, cookie crumbs, sprinkles probably, crushed candies, other stuff. I used hazelnuts (mmmmmmm).


oh yeah! and don't bother buying paper candy cups if you don't want to -- little rounds cut out of wrapping paper are pretty cute. just squash the paper circles on the top of a bottle of soda - presto custom paper-cup!

(the egg carton is less posh. but hey, it was just for my friends, they don't care. ^_^)

Aww, I hope you feel better soon (and that the coffee does the trick).

On the other hand, those truffles look absolutely delectable... I know you saved me some, right? ;o)

oooh, the Christmas party sounds like it was a delicious affair!! sounds like a great restaurant, as well.

a FREE vegan buffet! oh, i am so jealous of you right now! (except for the hangover, i'm glad i don't have that - so by the way, feel better!) mmm...kale and squash and cabbage rolls and peanut satay and fig bars. it must have been so overwhelming to be surrounded by a massive quantity of vegan food. that doesn't happen often enough, we're normally in the minority...

yummy looking truffles, i wish i could have some of yours now that the holidays have arrived!

Wow... That sounds like a crapload of food. Sorry about the hangover, though. :(

I have a recipe for truffles, but it only includes cocoa, bittersweet chocolate and a little soymilk. I hope they don't come out tasted like crap. :(

I can't compete with green door, but my dinner party is going to be awesome too! and you won't have a hangover because we don't drink. Are there going to be any truffles left to bring? :)

ruby red vegan, it is SO the best restaurant ever, and I never eat there because it's usually so expensive. it *was* a bit overwhelming, and I kept handing bites of stuff to my sister, asking "does that taste like cheese to you?" because everything tasted so savoury and good (the Green Door is only *mostly* vegan, but I was assured there was no animal products in anything I chose, it was all just THAT delicious!)

a-k - thank you! truffle joyfulness and montreal snow are bits of my heart, to be sure ^_^

ashasarala - they should turn out perfectly, really. I'm convinced that truffles don't really need anything other than chocolate + non-milk to taste good. plus, I have a hard time believing anything you make could turn out crap! :p

anardana, there's actually quite a few of them left! for sure I'll bring them, plus a savoury side. and I'll dress up as per request! :D

2.) you know you're a foodie and/or crazy vegan when a.) you post about how good "chewy noodle thingers with seaweed in them" are (asi n your case) or b.) you read about them on someone else blog and think they sound amazing (as in mine). ^_^

Wowz. The spread sounds amazing...I wish I immediate access to it right now. Love your truffles too--it's funny--I was making truffles this morning. Must be something in the air.

Awesome! I always say I want to make truffles, but never have quite gotten around to it. Yours look so good, especially the nutty ones.
