Chickpea Cutlets!!!!!

See, if I blog I don't have to write essays... (oh, the logic that sustains me XD )

Sooo... I made the cutlets. And I think I confirmed my suspicion that I'm not the biggest fan of Knife & Fork style dinners... I also discovered that I actually DO own a steak knife, which I needed to eat these. They were good, I guess, but I only really started to enjoy myself once I scraped the mustard sauce off and started eating everything with my hands. Basically, there was a lot of hype, and I think if I had heard absolutely nothing about them I'd be pretty impressed, especially with the texture, but I don't think I'll even be making them again. Or if I did, I'd make them into nugget-sizes and dip them in a creamy tofu dip, which I think would match them like a charm.

The v-con mustard sauce itself was pretty good, just not on top of anything, which is probably due to sheer salt content (broth, grain mustard, my low-quality sherry wine, soy sauce, AND caper brine are all basically made of salt and that's like 95% of the recipe). I liked it out of a spoon, and I think it'll make a killer mustard-y sandwich spread tomorrow, but it was kinda too thick and strong to use as a sauce. Dreena's lemony green beans and potato smashers get A++++, though, I liked those best of all.

I also made the ED&BV Supercharge Me! Cookies this morning, and zomg, they have come to waggle their deliciousness at all the other, more unhealthy cookies that have come before. Cause they're A-W-E-S-O-M-E. They don't taste like health cookies at all, they just taste spelty tender and chewy, with a faint hint of toasty coconut and nutty butter chew... dear, I could eat a whole pan.

I've decided to start seriously working through the V-con and my Dreena books, as you might be able to tell. I'll have to quash my desire to experiment haphazardly with my own recipes for a while, but I'll probably learn more about cooking this way (or at the very least start grocery shopping with an actual plan). I'm hoping that one day, someday, I can say to my grandkids that "yes, I made EVERY recipe in that there book. Who knows why! Now let's go climb a mountain cos I'm vegan and insanely healthy for an old lady, woooo!" (or something like that X)

sorry that the cutlets weren't as good as a lot of people think they are - oh well! at least the Super-Charge Me Cookies were a success!! and hey, you and I think alike with those (check out my blog post for today, to see why, haha).

yep, I've been trying to work through certain cookbooks as well - good luck with Veganomicon and ED&BV!!

I'm actually not crazy about the cutlets, either!

I made the cutlets for Thanksgiving and I felt the same. It's possible that they were good but just not what I expected. I had no idea they would be so chewy.

Okay, here's the deal with the cutlets: I wasn't super impressed either, but I put my leftovers in the fridge for later use. And after the reheat a couple days later, WOW! They tasted amazing. The same thing happened the second time I made them (as nuggets, which does work really well). Did you eat them right after you made them?

Dang it, this is the third post I've read today about those awesome super-charged cookies. I already knew Dreena was a dessert goddess...so this must be a sign from God that I REALLY need to make those cookies!

Oh that is funny that all three of us posted them on the same day!!

I think making those cutlets as nuggets sounds fabulous. I remember making my own mustard sauce to drizzle over them... I was too lazy to get out all those ingredients.

Good luck getting through those cookbooks! That would be cool if someone worked through every single one of them. It would take forever!!

I'm on a mission to work through those cookbooks too. There's some great new stuff to try.

I agree with you completely on the chickpea cutlets. They are good, but I just couldn't understand what all the hype was about. As a matter of fact, my next blog post was going to be all about that.

I think it's simply peer pressure that caused everyone to believe these were the bestest creations ever! ;)

I also have a goal of making every single recipe out of my cook book, only I plan on making every single recipe out of every single one of 'em!

ha ha ha I love that a bunch of you made the supercharge cookies at the same time!

I agree with you about "fork-and-knife" dinners... and since I don't do wellw ith seitan, I've been feeling sorry for myself that I haven't been able to try the cutlets. I'm glad to hear I'm not mising out as much as I'd feared...

I actually loved these--it was the little taste of lemon that won me over.

I thought the cutlets were pretty good. I also think they'd be good meatball-style in some spaghetti. I dislike mustard so I put spaghetti sauce on top of them.
