Pureed Spicy Sweet Potato & Peanut Stew with Chickpeas

My new gotten-for-giftmas copy of Eat, Drink & Be Vegan is finally a little warped and cook-stained! I got home from used-book shopping* very VERY starving, but for some reason instead of being sensible and making a sandwich I decided to go Moroccan, because I'm on a severe Morocco kick, I think. I almost bought a jar of pickled lemons. Haha.

So yeah... after about an hour I had a gigantic pot of incredible stew, a quick salad with her Cumin-Cinnamon vinaigrette, a somewhat-okay attempt at a Batinjaan Zalud (maybe deficient due to lack of garnish?), moroccan olives, and the cutest portion of whole wheat couscous you ever did see, prepared in a tiny metal measuring spoon. The flavours were all very good friends on the plate (yet each distinctive), and the stew itself was pure comfort (t
hough it could use more heat and didn't seem to suffer from lack of celery). It was also suprisingly clean-tasting for something I expected to be heavy, and I'm having a hard time running back to the kitchen to grab another mouthful... mmm. I love Dreena's food! I can't wait to make more stuff from this book! Anyone have any recommendations?

*if anyone cares, I got the Life & Opinions of Tristram Shandy, The Transposed Heads, and a Kafka collection, woo!

~~ ALSO: in an interesting twist of internet-fate, I stumbled across Envirowoman's Amazing Blog shortly after eating my plastic-wrapped noodles the other day and went, "woah, hey - I really can't be eating this for reasons of the earth, as well!". I got inspired. I have a hideous compost container right on the counter now (even though I live in an apartment and don't actually HAVE a place to put all the rotten-food when it gets fulled up). I started a paper bin. I have no idea what to do with my tin cans. Maybe I'll just sneak my stuff into other people's recycling bins in the dead of night, with a ninja mask on, and pretend I'm some kind of bizarro-universe version of Robin Hood...

Sweet potatoes, chickpeas, AND peanuts? Sounds like a match made in vegan heaven :o).

Mmm, that stew looks delicious! I'm with you on the tin cans, I have no recycling program in my town. I do like the ninja recycler idea though!

I agree with the chocolate covered vegan - sweet potatoes chickpeas and peanuts are pretty much my idea of culinary heaven.

Do let us know how your composting and recycling works out. I'm like you--my unit block has no recycle bins, even though every freaking other home in my city does. Yet we still separate and sneak our recycling into the neighbours bins sometimes. We used to separate compost, despite having a paved patio with no place to compost. When we realised we would just have to tip it in with the rubbish, we gave up on composting...

renting is such a pain in the ass.

Oh baby, that stew looks awesome! I am tickled most though, by the thought of you doing renegade recycling, as I am now thinking of it.

I have trouble with the compost thing as well, but my friend told me there're ways to start one right under your kitchen sink! That is, if you don't mind worms. :-/

ED&BV is one of the many recipe books on my wish list. I look forward to more reviews!

okay, so the food waste is now HEAPING on the counter... I'm probably gonna dump it in my building's front bushes on my way out tonight. Yeah, I know, kind of gross, but it's a pretty big space and it's certainly better than all the windblown newspapers that are there right now. (oh montreal... you so dirty)

I never knew there was a Tristam Shandy movie! It's looks wicked funny, I wish it was online... the book promises to be pretty good, though. Crazy postmodern loosy-goosey writing structure, optional punctuation... thee hee, can't wait to start it!

Your meal looks amazing, I can't wait to try that stew.

BTW, I love the blog but find the black background so hard to read. Maybe it's just me...?

Your apartment doesn't even have recycling? That's insane. I used to live in an apartment building where the recycling bins were all in the basement across from the laundry room. We would keep all our recycling in a cardboard box by the door of our apartment and then carry it down, and sort it down there.

It should be a regulation that recycling be provided in all apartment/condo buildings, along with composting.

Judy it isn't just you, I find the black hard to read too.

hmmm... I don't know how I feel about changing the colours, but I could play around a bit. I do agree it's hard to read, but maybe I'll just make the font bigger and see if that helps? thanks for feedback, btw! :)
