VeMoFo#2: What actually happens when I say I'll "eat out"...

Step 1: get distracted by one big surreal display of plastic crepes.  Can I eat them?  Oh absolutely not... but they sure are shiny.  It totally appeals on that japanese-restaurant-display level.  Incidentally I was with someone named "the Crepe" at the time... !

Some flavours are normal.  Banana Tiramisu, Mango Royale, Mango Supreme, okay, I get that.

Spicy Beef Rolitos and Cheeseburger though... I dunno man... I guess it's good there are no animal products in there, ultimately.  And I seriously want to know who crafts these things, can you imagine that job?

Then I went to a deli and ordered a boiled potato.  (delicious!)

This city needs a 2 AM vegan reuben like nobody's business....

VeMoFo#1: legomen and faulty wiring has EVERYTHING to do with food, probably

It's here, it's here, its finally here!  I should have been there at the crack of midnight to herald in the spooky awesome best-month-ever, Octember!  I mean, October!  Yes!

There was a blackout a few days ago, and the only thing running was some moody candles and yeah, enough dwindling battery power for me to sort through my old food photos.  Which isn't so terribly important to mention I guess, except for how perfectly it sums up my feelings about the mofo!  Blog to the end!  Wow, I'm really into this this year.  I don't even have time!!  But I feel like having fun, I guess.  Tell some stories.  Stretch my abilities a bit, maybe even go out for dinner or try vegan cheese, actually photograph some of my favourite veggie haunts, make an instructional post, make some food art, etc, it's all good.

Oh yeah, and after a photo like that I just have to use the alterna-Mofo-banner, letting one's inner freak fly..

Maybe I'll have a movie themed dinner!

Or finish this post with a picture of lego vikings as a really really incredibly roundabout way of celebrating the fact that THERE IS NOW A WAFFLE IRON IN THE HOUSE!

is good times ya ?

now I just need a jingle and some snazzy wrapping

I went to a convenience store for the first time in a couple weeks since quitting diet soda - and all of a sudden I was pretty reminded of how delicious candy bars are. I don't even like candy bars usually! But they looked really good that particular night.

So I went home and stirred together some no-stir peanut butter (ironical!), icing sugar, peanuts, crushed up rice cake, molasses, and salt, formed it into a log and coated it with some melted Cocoa Camino fruit & nut chocolate. Popped in a the freezer, then removed to get all soft and chewy again - it was so a real chocolate bar! It looked kinda like a turd. But tasted like a wunderbar, and I still have some left. :)

meat and potatoes for those with fey teeth

The greatest supper ever devised? At least very very close. Brown rice toast with cashew butter, sultanas, fig jam, cortland apple slices (local) and sweet grapefruit (not so local). I dunno why, it was just perfect last night, very comforting, when down like a sweet dream. And no stove required, just a mouth for nomming. I swear I do eat vegetables. :)

(I am indeed posting about toast. We are all allowed to do it once. Yes? Yes.)

survey says... I like food

Liz has made another great survey (not me Liz, but this Liz). Had to fill it in. Must. Answer. Questions...... ..... ...

1. Name a song that involves food in some way.

Blueberry Boat - The Fiery Furnaces

2. What criteria do you use when choosing a new cookbook to buy?
It has to have an approach to basic recipes that I would never have thought of by myself. Cool twists, you know? And in all seriousness, a heck of a lot of amazon reading and maybe I test a recipe or two first if I can.

3. What did you eat today?
oatmeal with raspberries, bananas and cashew butter
rice pilaf, ambercup squash, steamed broccoli & a chocolate chip cookie
big hunks of dragonfruit, cucumber, some different leftover squash (acorn possibly), and a cranberry muffin.
miso soup and a carrot
a couple mints

4. Name a vegan food that you know exists but you have never tried.
vegan cheese, cream cheese, yogurt or sour cream. It's a whole big uncharted territory that one.

5. The Food Network just called and needs you to start your new show tomorrow. What will the title of the show be?
Kamut in the Kitch. Uhhh... lame. whatever. Vegan Party.

6. Favorite hot sauce or other spicy condiment?
Sriracha

7. How old were you when you became vegetarian/vegan?
Vegetarian ages 11-16
Vegan ages 17, 23-24

8. Favorite vegan cheeze?
Homemade cheezy sauce, so far I like SusanV's mac and cheese the best (I haven't made many)

9. Cutest baby animal?
Otters! Or wee little lizards!

10. Favorite type of jam/jelly/marmalade/preserves?
Fig! It doesn't need toast, just a spoon.

11. Do you take any vitamins/supplements?
Calcium magnesium. I should probably take some B vitamins here and there before I get that weird B12 deficiency thing.

12. What food/dish most embodies the Fall season?
Cinnamon in EVERYTHING. And I do mean everything.

13. What food would you have a hard time living without?
Oh, you know, tofu. I crave the stuff if I can't get it for a few days.

14. Coffee, tea, or hot chocolate?
First - green tea or earl grey with breakfast. Then black coffee hot enough to sear a few layers of tongue off after that (can't drink it with food or it'll inhibit iron absorption I think). And then gigantic mugs of any kind of tea after that. Hardly ever hot chocolate. I like hot mugs of caffeine, oh I do......

15. It’s 10PM and you’re starving. What do you eat?
Banana, as anything else might be too cold and structurally challenging enough to wake me up too much. maybe a pudding.

16. If you have an animal companion, what is his/her favorite food?
Satchmo-cat just uses my water cups as her own.

17. Worst injury you’ve gotten in the kitchen?
I sliced my thumb on a meat-slicer (don't ask, bad job) right down to the bone once. My supervisor tried an old greek trick of rubbing tobacco in it to stop the bleeding, which might have worked but mostly just stung a lot. And then I got the afternoon off!

18. When you have a food-related question, who do you call?
The internet in general

19. Summer is ending- What food will you miss most?
Peaches, all the berries. Avocado!

20. What snacks do you keep in your purse/backpack/desk at work?
My candy drawer at home always has dark chocolate, ginger candies, a couple lara/luna bars, and those peanut and sesame brittles with the white tapioca cake underneath.

21. Favorite soup to make on a rainy day?
Spicy, thick, tomatoe-y barley something with lots of pepper and a hunk of marmite-spread dark bread alongside.

22. What’s your favorite combination of fresh vegetable and/or fruit juices?
Only ever tried carrot, celery and ginger, but I loved it! Spicy and surprisingly sweet.

23. Favorite brand of root beer?
I don't know... but I like this kind of ginger beer

24. Make up your own question!
If your kitchen had a flag, what would it proudly wave?
Uhhhhh.... It would have a pirate ship with like, 18,000 cookies spilling out of it. And Satchmo cat up in the rigging, just because. :D

wine, meet chickpeas. and a good day to you sir!

A post-holiday fridge is usually a riot of leftovers, and this thanksgiving was no exception, and yet -- what do I have left here? Hmm... chickpeas, loads of peppers that are going wrinkly, red wine, a bag full of cut onions, mushrooms, and 1/2 eggplant. Shazam, that means ratatouille! Regardless of the amount of wild rice stuffing there is still left to eat. I'm firing up the oven now!

So I roasted the whole deal with a head of garlic and added a whole bunch of thyme, rosemary, basil and tarragon, some tomatoes, stirred stirred and THEN - oh my, like magic, it was wine-y and oven-roasted sweet and slurpily good. Go french stews. I'll be having these leftovers over hoecakes for lunch today!

design your muffin, not your dog

In honour of all the genetically designed dogs out there, and mostly because I wanted to bake with cranberries, I present my entry for Urban Vegan's designer muffin challenge -- Chocolate Cranberry Kamutflake Muffins! With a hint of orange and cinnamon for the season, and a bit of delicate crunch from the flakes, I do think I've done okay here... I draw the line at encouraging vanity pets - but I couldn't resist throwing some of my own namesake kamut into a baked good for the fun of it. So good!

Kamut's Chocolate Cranberry Kamutflake Muffins (makes 6)

1/3 cup unbleached white flour
1/3 cup whole wheat pastry flour
1/2 tbsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp cinnamon
1/3 cup rolled kamutflakes
2 tbsp margarine
1/4 cup applesauce
1/2 cup sugar (I might use 1/4 cup next time)
1/2 tsp vanilla
1/2 tsp orange extract or 1 tsp orange zest (optional)
2 tbsp silken tofu
2 tbsp soymilk
1 cup cranberries
1/3 cup chopped dark chocolate bar pieces

1. Preheat oven to 350 F. Lightly grease a 6-hole muffin pan (and I actually recommend using liners for these guys, which I didn't do this time, but will next time).
2. Sift together the flour, salt, cinnamon and baking soda in a large bowl. Add the kamutflakes and give it a stir.
3. Cream together the margarine, applesauce and sugar until smooth. Add the extracts, tofu and soymilk, then pour all the wet ingredients into the dry and stir until just combined. Fold in the cranberries and chocolate.
4. Bake for 30 minutes or so (I'm actually not 100% on the time, and my oven is weird), or until the middles are firm when pressed and the tops are golden brown. Pop out when they're cool and enjoy!

I kinda wanna dive in that cranberry right there. :D

getting my inspiration back

I've decided this winter will be an indian-styled winter. South indian, spicy and warming, full of root veg... it's actually getting my passion for cooking back. Pomme made a great sambar last night and I made the apricot rice from Vegan Fire & Spice, neither authentic, but I started to actually ramble about food again, dreaming of dals and spice blends and techniques again... this is good. :)

And my first recipe from More Great Good Dairy-Free Desserts was the caramel popcorn, which is essentially cracker jacks and toasty-crisp-sweet-YUM. I might use peanuts instead next time instead of sunflower seeds, but hey, it's so easy and good I'll probably be whipping up a batch for thanksgiving nibbles next week.

Yeah... can you believe that we're hosting thanksgiving for both our families in our TINY apartment? MINISCULE apartment. 15 people? We'll see how this madness goes... my mother is already lamenting the lack of turkey (she won't after we're through, though!).

.............. 15 people. X_x

festivus! chili and pie!

I'm so bad... I have been all but absent from the blogging world for a long time, I know... art has been taking up a lot of my creative attention these days. It's been oatmeal/miso/salad forever (and I don't mind, it's just not worthy of post). I will try, though - I took down my Veganmofo banner thinking I wouldn't have the time... but you know what? I'm gonna *make* time. I will even get around to all of your blogs, because I know you've been doing incredible things that I will be sorely tempted to make but won't have time for... but isn't that the way of inspiring food? :D

So yeah... there were actually two dinners of total note in the past few weeks. We made the most perfect chili dinner EVER, I mean, it was off the hook. The chili was spicy chipotle-chocolate with shrooms, corn, peppers, tvp and 4 kinds of beans and it did that... um... chili-thing, where the texture is kinda like... kinda thick and sticky. In the best way!
(there was even red rice and super garlicky sour cream, meaning that Liz swirled her whole plate together like one giant steaming burrito and proceeded to cry little pearly tears of "OMG vegans eat SO WELL!").

We even fried something! Lots of somethings, meaning corn chips. In heart shapes (and moon shapes, and snowflakes and each of our names, but mostly hearts because being twee is cool again, I swear.)

All right, dinner number two... pagan thanksgiving! Or autumn equinox if you prefer. It's the time when the day and night are the exact same length, on September 22, and some like to celebrate with wine and apple desserts, and stories and tarot readings. (hint: we are those people)

Pomme cornbread of another flavour, this time with peppers and zucchini, because cornbread is basically the best accompaniment to everything. Including ice cream! .... okay, okay..... maybe not. But yummy with ratatouille, which we did have.

There it is! From Aux Vivres, actually, so basically super fatty and tasting kinda like gold. Along with couscous, steamed chard and veggies, and the most amazing sagey roasted veggies, it was easy pants to put together this dinner after work and still covered every "festive" base, I think.

And having an ugly apple pie for dessert doesn't hurt that cause, either. Ugly and the best thing that ever happened to apples, that is.
(a mix of cortland, granny smith, macintosh and yellow delicous)

Oh right! And I almost forgot to mention! THAT is my harvest! My weeny teeny tomato harvest. Yep. And it was alllllll worth it. For serious, for true - being able to look outside of my 4th story window to a fire escape full of fragrant vines was the real benefit to this whole endeavour. They're just really cute, tart, perky symbols of urban defiance, woohoo!

100 flakes and counting

So I've posted a hundred times since the inception of this wee blog! Looking back... there's been some very proud moments, some not-so proud moments, an epic battle or two, my first batch of cupcakes ever, a heckuva lot of sushi, even more things made with blueberries, and for the record, since acquiring the veganomicon last november, I'm officially over halfway through! (150 recipes finished, I think?).

And I do post almost everything I make that is beautiful/interesting/weird, or at least a good basis for a joke, but just for today I think I'll pull back the curtain on what really gets eaten around here, pretty much every day. Basically, If I haven't posted about it, it's certain to be one of these things:

Oatmeal!

Oh oatmeal, oh lovely, oh OATY and predictable. How much do I love thee? Enough to adapt my schedule around your warm and nutty scent? Enough to know the subtle bouquets of every bulk bin oatflake within a 4 block radius? Enough to wistfully ALMOST NEVER make pancakes (at least not before 5 pm)? To have a designated oatmeal-spice section of the cupboard (with the special dates that I buy just for the porridge)? To own specialty equipment designed for your fluffiness?

Oh yes. Most certainly. And did you know that mango is fabulous in it? As are blueberries, but you probably knew I was going to say that. ;P

Natto Bowl / Miso Soup!

I got converted, most definitely hooked on natto since I first tried it. With a little squodge of perfectly cooked brown rice and loads of veggie on top, it's no-effort and nourishing and really really yummy.

And as a bonus you can freak people out with the stringiness of it all. And as another bonus ---- the cutest girl in the entire world eating natto!

(as for miso soup... everything I've said about the above applies, + floating bits of hot jiggly salty tofu, - stringiness. YUM)

Tomato Soup!

As for dinner, I've decided to not be ashamed of this anymore. After all - it's an icon, it's a cultural equalizer, and it tastes REALLY GOOD with cheezy crackers. It has a full serving of vegetables, enough salt to kill you, some white sugar 'cause we love that stuff, and oh my gaaaad is it comforting. I love you tom soup. Love love love. With cashews and cilantro and mexican veggies. With olives and balsamic and onion. With readymade curry paste, or stir fry sauce, or over rice, and especially with frozen peas floating in it. It's soaked up many a night of drinking, been a cheap meal when I couldn't afford more, and goddamnit... it just tastes good. LOVE! :DDD

*cough*

Soooooo yeah. That's my secret diet. My non-postable eatables. Regular schmanciness with resume, oh, probably at the crack of dawn tomorrow. I've been making cakes. Multiple cakes! And thanks to everyone for your support and comments and love and ideas and basically just making this whole blog-thing worthwhile. I couldn't have grown so much or tried so many new things without you! <3

a round of applause for the vegans!

Thank you so much Poopiebitch, Dark Faerie, Cyn of Pink-Haired Girl and Katy of Legally Vegan for nominating me for the Brillante web award! I figure it's already gone around a lot, but in the interest of complimenting people I'll nominate seven other bloggers who I think deserve such a cute little graphic on their site --

1. A-K / Swell Vegan, for not only having truly droolworthy photography and so many creative and sometimes raw meals, but also for sending me so many delicious (and repeatable) recipes over the past few months!

2. Theresa / Tropical Vegan, for her creative twists on tropical bounty, and her dedication to living sustainably and being an informed and responsible human being in every way. And also Nacho is adorable!

3. Sarah / Vegetalion, for that quirky sense of humour and always entertaining posts on adventurous foodstuffs! Eating by spectrum, dealing with zombie yams, or inventing vegan gulab jamun, it's never boring over there. :P

4. Kittee @ Cake Maker to the Stars, which has inspired me since Vegan Day:01 to forget rules and get colourful, experimental, and most importantly irreverent with my cooking (and other parts of life, too!)

5. Jes @ Cupcake Punk, mostly because I just like her style, but also for the gorgeous photography, and for putting pistachios in everything (and for having a gray cat called Dorian Gray ;)

6. Sarchan @ Emo Potato, for the most hugest and deliciousest looking meals/foods ever, you seriously have to cook for me at some point! (also: smiths references + best blog name ever = awesome)

7. Michelle @ My Zoetrope for having such beautiful and jewel-toned artwork (it is seriously attractive), throwing in some great-looking vegan yumminess, and also for being such a strong supporter of the Vegan Etsy team, hurray!

Thanks to all of you, and to so many other blog authors who make my morning oatmeal+coffee time so much more fun and funny and inspiring! We're doing the good work, yo. :)

memes! anyone notice how meme is me-me?

So I was tagged again for the 5 Things meme, by Swell Vegan and Rabbit Food! Eep, I'm not sure what else there is to say about myself, unless we had a lovely beverage and a sunlit cafe to talk in for a while... I suppose the most important things about a person are those things they strive for, though, so I'll list my top five upcoming projects.

1. A cookzine, finally! I can't boast a lot of recipes, but those that I do have are special and fun, and it's been too long since I've made a zine. I just need to come up with a name first, and then all the cutting and pasting will follow after. It'll probably be decorated to the nines. :D

2. I saw Rachel Brice on tv recently and fell in love. At least with the concept of tribal bellydance. It's almost like how I dance anyway, but I'm really interested in adding some real structure and tradition into my own thing. I've already found some instructional videos on Youtube and I can make my belly swim like a snake! (this also has the added bonus of increased ab-strength, which just makes life easier in general). Not to mention I get to make a similarly decked-out costume for the next solstice festival I go to!

3. The etsy store, but I've already mentioned that! I went to the bank yesterday to find out why I have a Visa account but no card yet. They didn't know, and advised me to call Visa themselves, but I AM taking steps toward this!

4. Finish the final and fifth installment in my Treehead painting series. I got an A on the four I have so far, but I want to make a fifth on my own time and see if maybe a bar or small cafe around the city would want to put them on the walls for a bit. Five is a good number for an art proposal, I think.

5. Start volunteering at the Santropol community garden. I couldn't schedule it in between classes last fall, but I can do it now, and I want to learn everything about growing things. Also, keep nurturing my tomato plants into strength - I hope I can transfer them soon. (and my herbs are starting to smell like herbs, which is such a thrill!)

And one thing I CAN cross off the list? I finally got Satchmo fixed, and she is so relieved and relaxed now, stretching out her funny little shaved belly! I'm pretty relieved, too. The summer should go by a lot easier now.

Love Like a Vegan also tagged me to post 6 words that describe myself, and I could save everyone a lot of time and say paradoxiquacious, but I can use english, too. :D

serious (no really, it's true)
determined
idiosyncratic
thoughtful
idealistic
tough

Neat! Okay now I tag... Sugar Shock, Damzlfly, Tropical Vegan, Ruby Red Vegan, & Vegan Eats and Treats to do the same thing.

5 Things. Or you know, 10 or 15.

It's friday again! woooooo!

In recent news, I've finally started talking on the ppk (I am upforair, hear me spod!), and I've also been tagged again to reveal 5 things about myself - by S. of The Student Stomach, AND Chelsea from No Whey Jose!, and apparently there's no insisting that I've already done this, oh no - I must bore you once more with the randomest of random me-facts that I can think of. The meme is cumulative! And so I list...

1. I used to have dreads until pretty recently. Loooooooong dreads. (about six years of growth maybe?)

2. As a kid I would eat ANYTHING if it was chocolate. Baking chocolate, waxy wedding favours hidden in the closet, smarties that were most definitely rancid, leftover dried up frosting, and yes, even easter eggs....

3. I like to go to summer festivals in the woods, and camp, and make vegan food, and dance to psy-trance music. The OM reunion festival especially.

4. My favourite band is Depeche Mode. (I'm aware of how awful that is)

5. I'm currently trying to quit smoking - I smoked half a pack a day for 7 years, but I've cut it down to 3 or 4 a day in the last few months. The only problem is stopping entirely, 'cause every time I try I get insomnia so bad I sleep maybe an hour a night. :/

6. I wanna be famous. For art! I used to stress over what direction my life should take (art or food? ART OR FOOD, WOMAN?!). But now I hardly think it matters. Hell, if I work in a bakery to pay the rent and keep my art a pure and personal thing, that's just great with me!

7. I can tie a cherry stem in a knot with my tongue.

8. I'm currently debating moving out of my 2-bedroom to live in a 20-person coop downtown. They dumpster dive, make collective vegan meals, run workshops, have a bike room, compost room, dj booth, library, meditation wing....... I dunno. Maybe. It's all pretty inspiring, but I'd have to leave Satchmo-cat behind.... and I've been known to REALLY like my alone time. We'll see.

9. My sister and I burst into song pretty constantly. Our favourite is rambling off all the lyrics to REMs "it's the end of the world as we know it" while not breaking a sweat. :)

10. I've never tried vegan cheese!

Whew! Okay, that was fun. Now I suppose I must taggggg... Stonielove, Comfort Food Vegan, Seitan Is My Motor, Rural Vegan, VeganCowGirl, To Live and Eat in LA, rocket ship go!, Hugger Food, Bigmouth Strikes Again, Vegan Deliciousness, and ummm... has anyone tagged Cakespy yet? If I oopsed and any of you guys have already done this, well guess what, you have to do it again just like I did! It's the neverending internet meme of better acquaintance!! ("noooooooo!", she says dramatically)

Er right, sorry. I made Susan's tofu quiches too, but I'll wait for tomorrow to take sunlit pictures. They were so quichey!

E is for....

Thank you so much to Veggie from the So What Do Vegetarians Eat Anyway blog for giving me a blogging award of excellence! Her blog is quite excellent as well and she's a fellow Ontarian, too! I'll do my best to not post when I'm tired and cranky and hopefully live up the that pretty little Jpeg of awesome. ;) As for passing this along, I'll send it to Vegetalion, Dabbles with Apples, Tofu For Two, The Metal Femme's Vegan Living, and Don't Lose Your Lunch!, even though there are SO many others that deserve it, these are the first 5 that come to mind.

And sweetie Lori of Pleasantly Plump Vegan has tagged me to reveal 5 facts about myself, which I hope I can manage without going off of a bunch of tangents! Ha ha, anyway, here goes:

1. As much as I seem pretty slothful (and I am), I used to teach snowboarding and yeah, I was pretty darn good at it, too.

2. I'm a super geek - comics, anime, sci-fi, fantasy rpgs, video games, you name it, I probably have some history of obsession with it. Especially Final Fantasy and the Chrono series, and wacky shows like FLCL and Haibane Renmai. I also have a black/blue Magic card deck that could probably smoke your artifact-deck to little pieces. :D

3. Both my parents are from B.C., and I think I have a bit of a west coast accent, at least I drawl out my short A's sometimes, especially if I'm feeling lazy.

4. My favourite colour is red.

(Incidentally I'm addicted to hot sauce. I went through half a tube of harissa yesterday, just by squirting it on pickles as a snack! :P)

5. I hate sleep. I'm constantly sleep-deprived because I think staying in bed is SOOOOO boring. Eek, right?

(BONUS FACT, because it's the most important thing about me and I forgot to mention it --- I live and breathe food, it's true, you know that. But to give some sort of perspective, my mind is actually divided 44%/60%/6% - Food, Art, and Not Tripping Over Stuff. For the record. :D)

So that's five (or more) random things about me. And now I'm passing this on to..... , Vegan Soul Power, Adventures in Vegan Cooking, Bitchin' Vegan Kitchen, Epicurvegan, and Half Baked Vegan. Yay for getting to know everyone better!

And just so this post isn't entirely devoid of food, here's the best video on Youtube, ever ----

hey look, it's a survey!

Survey time again! Liz makes interesting questions, and I memed it from Coppe and Adele. I fight boredom good, yeah? :)

1 . If you have to choose between locally grown or organic, which do you usually choose?

I usually don't have an option, I tend to go with whatever's cheapest out of necessity. But if I was in a position to choose, I would probably go with local, out of a desire to community-build. And with any luck it would be part of a performance piece.

2. Favourite way to prepare potatoes:
Any way! Okay, fittingly enough, the aloo paratha recipe down below is probably my favourite way. It's hard to go wrong with cayenne and cilantro and lime.

3. Do you press your tofu before preparing/cooking it (if you eat soy)?
Pressing tofu makes me not want to eat it so much, which is sad cause it's my fav. So I usually make recipes that don't call for pressing (ie; crumbled feta type stuff or scrambles)

4. Name your favorite recipe that is a tradition in your family:
Probably mincemeat tarts at giftmas, which we *usually* make with "minced fruit" (the vegetarian version), but this year it was the real lardy stuff so I couldn't partake. And we usually make trays and trays of them, the really tiny kind and they're immensely pop-able. Next year, I guess.

5. Any food allergies?
Penicillin is based in bread mold I guess, but no, not really.

6. When you want to go to a fancy dinner, where do you go?
Where would I *potentially* go if I did indeed go out for fancy dinners? The Green Door Restaurant in Ottawa is choice tops. It's buffet-style, and the marinated shrooms are otherworldly, as is anything they decide to do with noodles and/or squash. In Montreal it's alllll about Aux Vivres, though. They have a chickpea curry sandwich they put on a fresh-made chapati with mango chutney that is pretty much keeping me from trying anything else on the menu. They have awesome cookies, too.

7. When you have a cold, what do you crave?
Ice-cold fruit, which I put in the fridge. Not much else.

8. What kind of water do you drink? (Filtered, spring, tap, etc.)
Tap water. And sometimes I'll put lime and stevia in it for kicks.

9. Name a flavor of soda you'd love to see:
*** I change my answer!! Not strawberry, no, some of these flavours maybe:

- apple chai
- mint cucumber
- balsamic strawberry

10. If the recipes you ate as a child were compiled into a cookbook, what would the title be?
Creamy Garlicky Potatoes and Pasta With Probably Some Pork Involved and a Yorkshire Pudding Chaser

11. If you were allowed to grow one food that can't grow in your climate, what would it be?
I've always wanted to try a warm orange off the tree. Something tells me I've never had a real orange before.

12. Favorite type of mushroom?
I haven't tried many of the fancy kinds, but right now I'll reach for shitake in a pinch. I like a mushroom to speak up about it's presence!

13. Most frustrating part of your kitchen?
Total lack of storage, and trust me, I've turned every conceivable place I could into a shelf of some kind. Half my pantry is currently in the living room and if I wanted to buy more flour I'd have to make real estate under my desk, I think. :/

14. Last food you burned?
The cornmeal masala coated vegetables I made for the Indian meal - the tips of the onions and the outsides of the brussels sprouts got a little blackened. But they tasted fine. I'm actually shocked when I burn anything, I tend to have really good luck in that department.

15. Usual response to a veg*n's favorite question, "But where do you get your protein?":
I usually blink a bit, stare off into space over their shoulder a bit, recite a line something like "beans, tofu, whole grains, beans, lentils, fake meat, there's this stuff called satan that's really weird and good." I rarely take the question seriously, I've never come across anyone who really seemed to think I didn't get any.

16. If you were baking your own birthday cake today, what flavor would it be?
I will be making it soon! And I'm making a key lime cheesecake, which I crave like the dickens about once every 5 years. I'll probably put a strawberry or mango element in there somewhere and then eat half of it. :)

17. Favourite brand of chocolate chips?
I like the President's Choice dark chocolate chips. Yeah, I know, they're not fancy or even quality chocolate by any stretch of the imagination. But they're cheap and decent enough and I like the packaging, it's very manly.

18. You have $200 of your tax return reserved for Williams Sonoma - What do you buy?
What's Williams Sonoma???

*quick google later....*

OHHHHHH. Holy crostini. Most of it? Okay, how about you hold this food processor and I'll be over here loading up on cake pans. Excellent...

19. Do you plan your menus in advance? Any tips to share?
I usually check the online flyer for my favourite grocery store, scan the produce and try to pick meals for the next week that incorporate most of the interesting ones in somewhat labour-intensive meals that I'll use to entertain myself between classes. Then I use the leftover produce in the second (more experimental) half of the week, and use every inch of my willpower NOT to run out for scallions or whatever that would be "just perfect in this meal!" in the interest of frugality and NOT being a grocery store addict.

And if I'm staring out into space on the bus with a glassy look and a fiddling thumb? You better believe I'm debating wether to use that yam in a soup or a sandwich. :p

20. You have 3 minutes before you have to leave the house and you're starving- What do you eat?
A small handful of tamari almonds and a piece of fruit go in my bag, and then I jet.

21. If Martha Stewart, Paula Deen, and Rachel Ray got into a fight, who would win and how?
Rachel Ray's got the arms... but there's something sneaky about Paula. And she's my favourite, so.... Paula. She'd have the butter-gun cocked and ready, anyway.

22. If you eat oatmeal, what do you add to it before serving?
3 1/2 chopped dates. cinnamon, nutmeg, very occasionally ginger. salt.

23. If you got to travel to one country and learn all the traditional dishes there, where would you go (ignore commitments in your current place of residence)?
India

24. Favourite late night snack?
A banana. It's a quiet soothing food, and more importantly it has tryptophan so the sleepy feeling isn't totally psychosomatic.

25. Favourite springtime food?
I am waiting with bated breath for the first wave of strawberries, at which time I'll get a huge plastic container of them, find a sunny green spot to sit and eat every juicy morsel.

26. Favorite food-related magazine?
I don't really get magazines, but I flipped through Vegetarian Times and I liked it.

27. Which do you prefer: shoyu, tamari, conventional soy sauce, or Bragg's Aminos?
I really liked the San-J shoyu I got for sushi-dipping.

28. What vegetable or fruit do you dislike the most?
Pomelo hasn't wowed me. Or papaya unless it's dried.

29. Name a holiday food you look forward to all year long:
A gigantic creamy slice of pumpkin pie, with soy whip and maybe an extra fork so I can scare people away from the leftovers and eat them ALLLLL myself. hee hee.

30. If you could convert anyone to veganism with your magic wand, who would you convert?
The love of my life, whenever they decide to show up.

VeganMoFo Pr0n Bonanza

I started hardcore veganing in august, and yes I have a computer full of pron so I'm leaking it out!! Happy Mofo everybody!!!

an overly crispy attempt to recreate Garibaldi Biscuits (british, delicious, very discontinued ;_;). When I was little my mom called them "squashed fly cookies", and apparently that wasn't just her twisted and humorous mind -- that's actually what they go by in britain! awesome.

creamy cauliflower soup, with turnip, white beans, potatoes, onions... pretty much anything white I could find. *excellent* with toasted pumpkin seeds on top.

eggless egg salad (from the ppk), with homemade crusty rolls.

The aforementioned crusty rolls (and crusty breads)! My first time using a poolish/starter, and soooooo worth it. Depthful, crunchy chewy yeasty best-bread-ever kinda worth it (I changed the recipe to be mostly whole wheat, and I can only imagine that made it even more flavourful).

Banana oatmeal chocolate chip bars from The Garden of Vegan. These are a throwback to the LAST time my oven died, as it's a microwave recipe, and actually I think nuking them makes them chewier and more brownie-like (a billion thumbs up on this recipe).

White bean and escarole soup with rye-garlic croutons. Kinda bland, but that's my fault for getting the recipe off of the internet, from among about 7 or 8 nearly identical versions. The croutons helped a lot.

Graham (gwam) crackers! Very very very good. I used raw coarse sugar instead of regular white and it made the texture really interesting and gave them a burnt caramel flavour. I love how they're not very sweet, these are probably actually my favourite cookies ever.

Broccoli-almond-tofu stir fry. Okay, super basic, but extremely nommish. (and it's a pretty picture!)

Black-eyed pea patties with sunflower sprouts and limeade. And barbecue sauce, cause that stuff is liquid yum, and have you ever tried sprouts with bbq sauce? Made for eachother, I swears.

And, as recently as last night - banana-chocolate pudding! I am so loving this pudding-for-dinner business I started doing recently. It's really no worse than a plate of creamy noodles in terms of nutrition (actually probably better), and there's something so fabulous about throwing a huge bowl of pudding in the fridge, going out for a night of what-have-you, and knowing you have velvety chocolate spoonlove to savour when you get home. (although last night it was so cold by the time I got back I nuked tomato soup with beanballs + broccoli in it instead - I could easily live off of tom-soup with a rotating roster of guest vegetables/grains).

more bonanza laterz! I still have a lot of pictures. :D

La Cucina Povera

So this is my kitchen, taking advantage of the wee bit of sunlight it gets in the afternoon hours. It's teeny tiny, the oven is about a foot wide and breaks constantly (it's currently broken. *weep*), the overhead light only works when the hall light is on, it faces a lovely adjacent apartment building and I'm running out of storage so badly I had to move my canned goods to a shelf in the living room. BUT, I love it!

Maybe because it's mine, and I've really stocked up a pantry of wonders over the past year (I was raised in house that bought ketchup by the crate and froze everything rather than throwing it out. Hording tendencies? Not surprising). And I really do like my tiny stove with the volcanic hotspot that turns cookies to char in mere minutes - once you know where the spot is, you can broil stuff right quick! Yay getting to know your appliances!

I don't have a picture of my beloved spice rack (made of two bricks and a piece of wood I found on Mont-Royal street = McGuyveriffic!), but I'll snap one tomorrow if I wake up before the sun sets. :)

Oh yeah - here's my dinner from last night: Italian breaded tofu, braised leeks & zucchini, marinara and almesan sprinkle). Not too fancy or difficult to make, (and my homemade
breadcrumbs were too gigantic to stick to the 'fu very well), but yummers. I just learned how to braise the other day, and, ummm.... I had a giant bowl of leeks for dinner tonight and that was it. So good.

Star's Cake

Am I doing the one post a day thing? I don't think I'm even indenture--*ahem*-- on the VeganMoFo Grand Official List of Obsessive Posting. No matter, I'll play along. Here's a cake! I made it for Star's 22nd, out of your standard wacky cake recipe (x2) with extra almond extract, most of the oil subbed for applesauce, and half the water turned to almond milk. It also features a double batch of that gooey pudding-y icing (that I like WAY better than buttercream), a layer of 4-fruit quebecoise jam, and homemade raspberry truffle chocolates on top. Oh, and a little bit of buttercream writing on top, because hey buttercream ain't so bad (in fact it's pretty delicious in small amounts). Nomanomnomnom.
